About this grant

Call for proposals to develop next-generation Smart and Multifunctional Textiles (SMT) designed to enhance soldier survivability against modern battlefield threats, specifically drone-based surveillance. As symmetric warfare returns to Europe, this initiative seeks to move beyond traditional uniforms by integrating innovative materials that can interact with their environment. The project aims to develop individual camouflage solutions that are both static and dynamic, protecting dismounted soldiers from high-precision sensors and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) across diverse climates, including Arctic and tropical zones. A total of €20M is available, with individual awards potentially covering the full amount. By harmonizing soldier system requirements across EU Member States, this effort aims to: Modernize Operational Capacity: Equip European forces with uniforms that regulate temperature and manage moisture in extreme environments; Foster Innovation: Stimulate the European textile and defense industries to create a fully independent supply chain for smart materials; and Increase Combat Effectiveness: Provide soldiers with a technological edge that allows them to operate undetected during both day and night operations, reducing the Union's strategic dependencies on external defense technologies.
