Eligibility requirements

All of the following criteria must be met:

  • Must be based at UK research organisation eligible for AHRC funding

How to apply

  1. 1Ensure your organisation is registered on the UKRI Funding Service before applying.
  2. 2Applications cannot be submitted through the Je-S system.
  3. 3The project lead is responsible for completing the application process.
  4. 4All team members and project partners are expected to contribute.
  5. 5Only the lead research organisation can submit the application.
  6. 6Start the application using the UKRI Funding Finder page.
  7. 7Confirm that you are the project lead before proceeding.
  8. 8Sign in or create a Funding Service account.
  9. 9If your organisation is not listed, request addition via support email and allow at least 10 working days.
  10. 10Create an organisation Administration Account to manage potential grants.
  11. 11Complete application questions directly or offline and upload required documents.
  12. 12Review the application in read-only mode before submission.
  13. 13Submit the application to the research office for checking.
  14. 14The research office will submit the final application to UKRI.
  15. 15Use images sparingly and include descriptive captions where necessary.
  16. 16Ensure uploaded files meet size and format requirements.
  17. 17Applications must be self-contained with clearly cited references.
  18. 18Do not use hyperlinks to extend application content.
  19. 19Use of generative AI tools is permitted with caution.
  20. 20There is no fixed deadline; applications are accepted continuously.
  21. 21AHRC begins assessment upon receipt of application.
  22. 22Applications cannot be modified after submission.
  23. 23Non-compliant applications may be rejected.
  24. 24Rejected applications may be resubmitted, with assessment completed within nine months.
  25. 25Personal data will be collected and handled according to UK data protection laws.
  26. 26Sensitive information should be submitted separately via email.
  27. 27No matched funding is required beyond the standard 20% FEC.
  28. 28Third-party contributions are encouraged.
  29. 29Successful applications may have some personal information published.
  30. 30Provide a plain English summary of up to 550 words.
  31. 31Ensure the summary is suitable for public and non-specialist audiences.
  32. 32Describe project context, challenges, objectives, and benefits in the summary.
  33. 33List core team members and assign appropriate roles.
  34. 34Only one individual should be listed as project lead.
  35. 35Select one primary discipline classification.
  36. 36Provide secondary discipline keywords describing the research area.
  37. 37In the Vision section, explain objectives, importance, and potential impact.
  38. 38In the Approach section, describe methodology, feasibility, risks, and outcomes.
  39. 39In the Team Capability section, demonstrate skills, experience, and contributions.
  40. 40Use the R4RI format to present team qualifications.
  41. 41Include optional additional context such as career breaks if relevant.
  42. 42Provide details of project partners including contributions and contact information.
  43. 43Upload letters of support from project partners in a single PDF.
  44. 44Ensure project partners confirm commitment and contribution.
  45. 45Do not include letters from host or co-lead organisations.
  46. 46Address ethical and responsible research and innovation considerations.
  47. 47Explain legal and ethical considerations for data usage and storage.
  48. 48Provide justification for resources and costs.
  49. 49Justify major expenses such as staff, travel, consumables, and infrastructure.
  50. 50Ensure resources are appropriate and provide value for money.
  51. 51Funding is not provided for individual equipment items over £25,000.
