Eligibility requirements

All of the following criteria must be met:

  • UK partners: based at UK research organisation eligible for AHRC funding
  • Brazilian partners: based at eligible institution in State of São Paulo
  • Must confirm eligibility with FAPESP and receive confirmation letter
  • Applications submitted simultaneously to AHRC and through SAGe system

What the funding covers

  • UK: FEC between £300K-£1.5 million, AHRC funds 80%
  • Brazil: FAPESP funds all justified costs
  • Maximum duration: 5 years

How to apply

  1. 1Start the application using the UKRI Funding Service application link.
  2. 2Ensure your organisation is registered on the UKRI Funding Service before applying.
  3. 3Applications cannot be submitted through the Je-S system.
  4. 4The project lead is responsible for completing the application.
  5. 5All team members and project partners are expected to contribute.
  6. 6Only the lead research organisation can submit the application.
  7. 7São Paulo-based project leads must confirm eligibility with FAPESP and obtain a confirmation letter.
  8. 8São Paulo-based project leads must submit their application through the SAGe system.
  9. 9Await confirmation from FAPESP that pre-assessment checks are completed.
  10. 10Send the SAGe application and eligibility letter to the UK project lead.
  11. 11The UK project lead must submit the UKRI application within 7 days of receiving the documents.
  12. 12Upload the FAPESP eligibility letter and SAGe application as attachments.
  13. 13Select ‘Start application’ on the UKRI Funding Finder page.
  14. 14Confirm project lead status before proceeding.
  15. 15Sign in or create a Funding Service account.
  16. 16If the organisation is not listed, request addition via support email and allow at least 10 working days.
  17. 17Complete application questions directly or offline and upload required documents.
  18. 18Review the application before submitting it to the research office.
  19. 19Submit the application to the research office for checking.
  20. 20The research office will submit the final application to UKRI.
  21. 21Use images only when necessary, include captions, and follow file size and format rules.
  22. 22Applications must be self-contained and references clearly cited.
  23. 23Do not use hyperlinks to extend application content.
  24. 24Use of generative AI tools is allowed with caution.
  25. 25There is no fixed deadline; applications are accepted continuously.
  26. 26Applications cannot be modified after submission.
  27. 27Rejected applications may be resubmitted, with assessment completed within nine months.
  28. 28AHRC begins assessment upon receipt of application.
  29. 29Personal data will be collected and handled according to UK data protection laws.

  31. 31Sensitive information should be sent separately via email with proper subject formatting.
  32. 32No matched funding is required beyond the standard 20% FEC.

  36. 36Describe project context, challenges, objectives, and benefits in the summary.
  37. 37List core team members and assign roles.
  38. 38Only one project lead should be listed.
  39. 39São Paulo-based applicants must be listed as project co-lead international.
  40. 40Select one primary discipline classification.
  41. 41Provide secondary discipline keywords describing the research area.
  42. 42Upload the FAPESP application form and eligibility letter as a single PDF.
  43. 43In the Vision section, explain objectives, importance, and potential impact.
  44. 44In the Approach section, describe methodology, feasibility, risks, and outcomes.
  45. 45In the Team Capability section, demonstrate skills, experience, and contributions.
  46. 46Use the R4RI format to present team qualifications.
  47. 47Include optional additional context such as career breaks if relevant.
  48. 48Provide details of project partners including contributions and contact information.
  49. 49Upload letters of support from project partners in a single PDF.
  50. 50Ensure project partners confirm commitment and contribution.
  51. 51Do not include letters from host or co-lead organisations.
  52. 52Address ethical and responsible research and innovation considerations.
  53. 53Explain legal and ethical considerations for data usage and storage.
  54. 54Provide justification for resources and costs.
  55. 55Include only UK costs in the resource summary.
  56. 56São Paulo-based costs should be included in the FAPESP application.
  57. 57Justify major expenses such as staff, travel, consumables, and infrastructure.
  58. 58Ensure resources are appropriate and provide value for money.
  59. 59Funding is not provided for individual equipment items over £25,000.
