EPSRC standard research grant, Nov 2023: responsive mode

About this grant

You can apply for a research grant in any area within the remit of Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). You must be based at an eligible UK research organisation. Standard research grants are available for researchers at eligible research organisations. There is no limit on the value of the grant or length of the project. You should ask for what is needed to deliver the proposed programme of research. Through EPSRC standard research grants we fund a wide range of projects, from small, short-term grants to multi-million-pound research projects including high-risk or high-return research, feasibility studies, instrument development, project specific equipment, and collaborative projects that cross different disciplines.

Eligibility requirements

All of the following criteria must be met:

• Must be based at an eligible UK research organisation
• EPSRC standard eligibility rules apply
• Project co-lead (international) can be based in Norwegian institution under UKRI-RCN agreement
• No uninvited resubmissions accepted
• Majority of research must fall within EPSRC remit

What the funding covers

• 80% of full economic costs (FEC)
• No limit on grant value
• No limit on project length
• Staff costs
• Equipment (up to £400,000 per item)
• Other items required to carry out project
• Costs related to impact
• Travel and subsistence
• High-risk or high-return research
• Feasibility studies
• Instrument development
• Project specific equipment
• Collaborative cross-disciplinary projects

1. 1Apply through UKRI Funding Service (not Je-S). No fixed closing dates - applications batched internally. Apply when ready. Processing throughout 2024, 2025 and 2026. Application includes: Summary (550 words), Core team, Thematic area alignment (indicate if part of critical technologies signpost), Vision and Approach (6 pages + 1 page workplan), Applicant and team capability (1,500 words R4RI format), References (1,000 words), Project partners and letters of support, Facilities (250 words), Sensitive information, Resources and cost justification (1,000 words), Ethics and RRI (500 words).
