About this grant

Apply for funding to purchase strategic infrastructure including equipment, resources or both. The funding seeks to improve UK scientific capability and enable cutting-edge research of high priority to EPSRC. This funding is for either purchase and set-up of infrastructure or resources to support existing infrastructure. The full economic cost (FEC) of your infrastructure must be at least £400,000. EPSRC expects no more than six applications from each institution per year.

Eligibility requirements

All of the following criteria must be met:

  • Must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for EPSRC funding
  • EPSRC standard eligibility rules apply
  • Research technical professionals can apply as project lead or project co-lead under specific conditions
  • No more than six applications per institution between 18 June 2025 and 17 June 2026
  • Minimum FEC of £400,000
  • Route two (resources to support existing infrastructure) only for invited applicants
  • No uninvited resubmissions accepted
  • UKRI-RCN and UKRI-IIASA agreements do not apply

What the funding covers

  • Purchase and set-up of strategic infrastructure
  • Resources to support existing strategic infrastructure (maximum two years duration)
  • Equipment, computing resources, software
  • Installation and commissioning costs
  • Support staff directly related to infrastructure operation

How to apply

  1. 1Apply through UKRI Funding Service. Applications are batched internally with no fixed closing dates. Submit when ready. Institutions should take a strategic approach to prioritize applications of highest strategic importance. Applications should not be 'nice to have' but strategic necessities for the institution's long-term strategy.
